{"id":1114,"date":"2025-08-07T20:08:58","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T18:08:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swazidailynews.com\/?p=1114"},"modified":"2025-08-07T20:08:58","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T18:08:58","slug":"zambia-denies-health-risks-flagged-by-us-embassy-over-acid-spill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genesisekucalenimedia.com\/edn\/1114\/business\/zambia-denies-health-risks-flagged-by-us-embassy-over-acid-spill\/","title":{"rendered":"Zambia denies health risks flagged by US embassy over acid spill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">LUSAKA &#8211; Zambia denied on Thursday that an acid spill in its copper-mining region six months ago still <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">posed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a serious health risk, a day after the U.S. embassy restricted travel to the area for U.S. officials <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">citing<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> widespread contamination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The spill occurred in February, when a tailings dam failed at a Chinese-run copper processing plant, spewing 50,000 cubic metres of acidic slurry into nearby rivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Southern African country&#8217;s government has sought to clean up affected areas using lime to lower acidity levels and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">said<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> there <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> no need for alarm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Laboratory results show that the pH (acidity) levels have returned to normal and concentrations of heavy metals are steadily decreasing, which means that the immediate danger to human, animal and plant life has been averted,&#8221; government spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa told a press conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE: <a title=\"US lawmaker questions Intel CEO\u2019s ties to China in letter to company board chair\" href=\"https:\/\/genesisekucalenimedia.com\/edn\/archives\/1035\">US lawmaker questions Intel CEO\u2019s ties to China in letter to company board chair<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Water and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">sanitation minister<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Collins Nzovu said Zambia would <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">speak to the U.S. over<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the concerns it had raised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/zm.usembassy.gov\/health-alert-u-s-embassy-lusaka-zambia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">U.S. health alert<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0on Wednesday <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">said<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the acid spill had <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">polluted<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> water and soil around the town of <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chambishi<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> where the plant is located <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that contaminants could also become airborne.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The company that operates the plant, Sino Metals Leach Zambia, has cooperated fully with the government and is paying for mitigation measures, Mweetwa said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A spokesperson for Sino Metals Leach Zambia did not respond to Reuters&#8217; questions on Thursday, stating the company had nothing to add to the government&#8217;s comments on the acid spill.
