Nobody wanted to take this step,&#8221; sporting director Simon Rolfes said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The past few weeks have shown that the steps to build a new and successful team have not been effective,&#8221; Rolfes said.<\/p>\n<p>Club CEO Fernando Carro said the decision was &#8220;painful, but necessary&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The sacking means the 55-year-old Dutchman now has the unwanted record of being the coach to be fired so early into a Bundesliga season, breaking the previous mark of five matches.<\/p>\n<p>Named United manager in July 2022, Ten Hag won the FA and League Cups but was let go after a run of just one win in eight matches midway through the 2024-25 season, the club&#8217;s worst start to a campaign in the Premier League era.<\/p>\n<p>Taking over after the most successful period in Leverkusen&#8217;s history, with an unbeaten league and cup double in 2023-24 including the first Bundesliga title in the club&#8217;s 120-year history, Ten Hag was tasked with overseeing a dramatic rebuild.<\/p>\n<p>Leverkusen lost several core members of the team this summer, including Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Jonathan Tah, Jeremie Frimpong, Amine Adli and Lukas Hradecky.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2407\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2407\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2407\" src=\"https:\/\/genesisekucalenimedia.com\/edn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ten-hag-sacked-250901g-1200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2407\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The club did not name a replacement for Ten Hag, saying the &#8220;training work would be taken over by the assistant coaching staff for the time being&#8221;.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Named Leverkusen manager on July 1, Ten Hag&#8217;s first match in charge was a 5-1 drubbing by Flamengo&#8217;s under-20s team in a friendly in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>After a 4-0 win over fourth-tier Sonnenhof Grossaspach in their German Cup opener, Leverkusen claimed one point from their first two Bundesliga fixtures.<\/p>\n<p>Leverkusen let a one-goal lead slip to lose 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim and on Saturday conceded two late goals against a 10-man Werder Bremen to draw 3-3, having led 2-0 and 3-1.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, German outlets Bild and Kicker both reported Ten Hag was facing the sack, despite his short tenure at the club.<\/p>\n<p>Ten Hag was tasked with bedding in more than a dozen new signings ahead of this season, including several young players.<\/p>\n<p><strong><div class=\"_df_book df-lite\" id=\"2346\"  data-title=\"\" wpoptions=\"true\" thumbtype=\"\" ><\/div><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The three most expensive signings in the club&#8217;s history \u2013 Malik Tilmann, Jarell Quansah and Eliesse Ben Seghir \u2013 all arrived this summer, for a combined cost of \u20ac102 million ($120 million) plus bonuses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Bayer Leverkusen have sacked manager Erik Ten Hag after just two Bundesliga matches in charge, the club announced&hellip;","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":2407,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"iawp_total_views":0,"csco_display_header_overlay":false,"csco_singular_sidebar":"","csco_page_header_type":"","csco_page_load_nextpost":"","csco_post_video_location":[],"csco_post_video_location_hash":"","csco_post_video_url":"","csco_post_video_bg_start_time":0,"csco_post_video_bg_end_time":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[37,43,30],"tags":[46,79,70,71,48,58,53,68],"class_list":["post-2400","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-soccer","category-sports","category-world","tag-africa","tag-betway-premiership","tag-caf","tag-champions-league","tag-feature","tag-national","tag-soccer","tag-sport","cs-entry","cs-video-wrap"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
