{"id":3513,"date":"2025-09-18T13:18:17","date_gmt":"2025-09-18T11:18:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swazidailynews.com\/?p=3513"},"modified":"2025-09-18T13:18:17","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T11:18:17","slug":"eswatini-pushes-for-multi-currency-sadc-rtgs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genesisekucalenimedia.com\/edn\/3513\/business\/eswatini-pushes-for-multi-currency-sadc-rtgs\/","title":{"rendered":"Eswatini pushes for multi-currency SADC-RTGS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eswatini has taken centre stage in the drive to transform the Southern African Development Community\u2019s Real-Time Gross Settlement (SADC-RTGS) system into a multi-currency platform, as the Central Bank of Eswatini (CBE) hosts the SADC-RTGS User Group Conference 2025.<br \/><br \/>The two-day meeting, held from Wednesday until September at the CBE\u2019s newly opened Conference Facility, brought together central bankers, financial institutions, and policymakers from across the region to chart the next phase of the RTGS renewal project.<br \/><br \/>Governor of the Central Bank of Eswatini Dr Phil Mnisi told delegates that preparations are advanced to allow the platform, which currently settles mainly in the South African Rand (ZAR), to accommodate the US Dollar and selected SADC domestic currencies.<br \/><br \/>\u201cThis will enhance intra-regional trade and gradually reduce reliance on a single settlement currency,\u201d the Governor said, emphasising Eswatini\u2019s commitment to supporting financial integration within SADC.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3519\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3519\" style=\"width: 2048px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3519\" src=\"https:\/\/genesisekucalenimedia.com\/edn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/PAGE-8-Governor-Dr-Phil-Mnisi-with-the-delegates.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"755\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3519\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Governor Dr Phil Mnisi with the delegates<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Launched in 2013, the SADC-RTGS has settled over ZAR 9 trillion in cross-border transactions annually. However, its reliance on the rand has long been cited as a limitation, especially for member states outside the Common Monetary Area.<br \/><br \/>The move towards multi-currency settlement aims to:<br \/><br \/>expand access for all 16 SADC countries,<br \/>ease foreign exchange bottlenecks,<br \/>reduce settlement costs and delays, and<br \/>build resilience against global currency volatility.<br \/><br \/>Speakers, including Adv. Magedi-Titus Thokwane and Daniel Mohau, noted that the technical infrastructure to support multiple currencies is already in place.<br \/><br \/>The choice of Eswatini as host was symbolic. The conference was the first major event at the new CBE Conference Facility, part of the bank\u2019s wider headquarters expansion project.<br \/><br \/>Officials said this milestone highlighted the country\u2019s role as a regional hub for policy dialogue and financial cooperation.<br \/><br \/>\u201cThis is not just about payments.
