On weekends in Eswatini, chances are you\u2019ll find Melusi \u201cMagesh\u201d Dlamini moving through the crowd with his camera, slipping into spaces most don\u2019t notice.<\/p>\n
One moment he\u2019s crouched low at a cultural festival, the next he\u2019s pacing the edge of a royal ceremony or concert stage, waiting for that instant when life reveals itself.<\/p>\n
His photographs are everywhere, on newspaper front pages, online platforms, in family albums, yet it\u2019s the story of how he got here that truly lingers.<\/p>\n
Magesh didn\u2019t arrive by the usual route. There was no photography degree, no expensive equipment, no training abroad. Instead, there was a restless curiosity, a willingness to experiment, and the conviction that pictures can tell the truth in ways words sometimes cannot.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just picked up a camera and never put it down,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
That first camera wasn\u2019t even his. He borrowed it while still in Form 2. Where others saw just a machine, Magesh saw possibility: a way to freeze time, to record history, to give weight to fleeting moments.<\/p>\n
Growing up in Mhlosheni, Nhlangano, with three siblings, he was surrounded by the energy of storytelling. Each of them gravitated towards the media in different ways, but it was Magesh who made the lens his home.<\/p>\n
After completing Form 5 at St. Francis High, he wasted no time. The very next day after writing his last exam, he was working as a photographer at Tattoo Palace in Ezulwini.<\/p>\n

He stayed for a year and a half before briefly pursuing IT studies, but the camera called him back.<\/p>\n
The years that followed became his self-made classroom. He studied the light at sunrise and sunset, experimented with angles and dissected images in newspapers, asking himself why some stirred emotion while others fell flat.<\/p>\n
Without realising it, he was teaching himself to see, not just to look, but to see.<\/p>\n
And so, when Eswatini celebrated, mourned, or turned a page in its story, Magesh was there, ready with his lens. His photographs have captured royal ceremonies, festivals, state functions, and community roadshows.<\/p>\n
They\u2019ve become part of the public record, shaping how the nation remembers itself.<\/p>\n
Yet behind the artistry is a harder truth: the road hasn\u2019t been smooth. Making a living in Eswatini\u2019s creative industries takes more than talent; it takes grit.<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes you shoot an event, and people don\u2019t understand the value of what you\u2019ve done,\u201d he says. \u201cThey see a picture, not the hours of chasing the moment, the editing, the storytelling behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Even so, his reputation has only grown. Colleagues trust his eye. Editors know his images will be sharp, honest, and human. Young photographers look at his journey and see proof that skill and persistence can carve out a place, even without formal training.<\/p>\n
For Magesh, photography isn\u2019t just work, it\u2019s legacy. \u201cPictures don\u2019t lie,\u201d he says. \u201cLong after we\u2019re gone, people will look at these photos to understand who we were, what we celebrated and what we struggled with.\u201d<\/p>\n
That belief has made him something of an unofficial archivist for Eswatini, chronicling everything from the dust of rural football pitches to the grandeur of state occasions. His lens searches for humanity in every frame.<\/p>\n
Now, as much as he builds his own career, he is intent on passing on the craft. He mentors young people, urging them not to wait for the \u201cright time\u201d or perfect equipment.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you have a phone, start with that,\u201d he tells them. \u201cIt\u2019s not the tool that matters, it\u2019s your eye, your patience, your story.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even as he cements his place behind the camera, Magesh hasn\u2019t stopped learning. He is currently studying Cisco CCNA at SoftTech, hoping one day to merge his passion for technology with his love of photography.<\/p>\n
But no matter what paths open before him, he is clear about one thing: \u201cPhotography is my first love.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a world drowning in fleeting images, Magesh\u2019s photographs endure. They remind us that history is not only written in words but also captured in moments, moments that one man with a borrowed camera had the courage to see, preserve, and share.<\/p>\n
For Magesh, photography is more than a profession. It is a calling. \u201cPictures don\u2019t lie,\u201d he says. \u201cLong after we are gone, people will look at these photos to understand who we were, what we celebrated, and what we struggled with.\u201d<\/p>\n
In many ways, he is Eswatini\u2019s unofficial archivist, documenting the nation\u2019s joys and its pains. Whether standing in the dust of a rural football pitch or under the bright lights of a state event, Magesh\u2019s lens finds the humanity in every scene.<\/p>\n
His dream now is to pass on what he has learned. He often mentors young people who are drawn to photography. \u201cI tell them, don\u2019t wait for permission. Just start. If you have a phone, start with that. What matters is the eye, the patience, the story you want to tell.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a world saturated with fleeting images, Magesh\u2019s photographs endure. They remind us that behind every event, every headline, every celebration, there are people and one man with a camera determined to ensure their stories are not forgotten.<\/p>\n
The enigmatic lens man today speaks highly of his work and the importance of education. He has gone back to school to study Cisco CCNA at SoftTech. He has ambitions of merging the two when he completes his studies.
