{"id":5067,"date":"2025-10-31T12:07:47","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T10:07:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swazidailynews.com\/?p=5067"},"modified":"2025-10-31T12:07:47","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T10:07:47","slug":"eswatini-elected-chair-of-un-economic-committee-for-southern-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genesisekucalenimedia.com\/edn\/5067\/business\/eswatini-elected-chair-of-un-economic-committee-for-southern-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Eswatini elected Chair of UN Economic Committee for Southern Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Delisa Magagula<\/p>\n<p>Eswatini has been elected Chair of the Bureau of the Thirty-First Session of the Intergovernmental Committee of Senior Officials and Experts (ICSOE) for Southern Africa, with Malawi chosen as Vice-Chair and Lesotho serving as Rapporteur.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was made at the opening of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) regional meeting, held in Ezulwini.<\/p>\n<p>The committee brings together senior government officials, economists, and policy experts from Southern African countries to shape the region\u2019s economic development agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Eswatini\u2019s election marks a key milestone in its growing role in regional policy coordination and economic integration efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The ICSOE is responsible for guiding UNECA\u2019s sub regional work programme, aligning it with the African Union\u2019s Agenda 2063 and the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after the election, the Director for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade, Mluleki Dlamini, expressed appreciation for the confidence shown by fellow member states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe accept this responsibility with humility and gratitude. Eswatini looks forward to working closely with Malawi, Lesotho, and all member states to strengthen regional cooperation and advance the economic transformation agenda for Southern Africa,\u201d Dlamini said.<\/p>\n<p>The new Bureau will oversee the Committee\u2019s deliberations under the theme \u2018Unlocking AfCFTA\u2019s Potential: Building Value Chains and Overcoming Barriers to Trade in Southern Africa\u2019<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5073\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5073\" style=\"width: 2048px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5073\" src=\"https:\/\/genesisekucalenimedia.com\/edn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PAGE-5-Business-Eswatini-CEO-E-Nathi-Dlamini-seated-with-MSMEs-Director-Mluleki-Dlamini-during-the-meeting.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Business Eswatini CEO E Nathi Dlamini seated with MSMEs Director Mluleki Dlamini during the meeting.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The session is focused on translating the AfCFTA framework into practical actions that enhance intra-African trade and industrial development.<\/p>\n<p>As Chair, Eswatini will coordinate policy discussions on trade facilitation, regional value chain development, and financing industrial transformation.<\/p>\n<p>The country is also expected to lead follow-up engagements between UNECA, SADC member states, and development partners on implementing key recommendations from the session.<\/p>\n<p>Worth mentioning is that, Eswatini\u2019s leadership comes at a time when the region is seeking to deepen economic integration, improve trade logistics, and reduce non-tariff barriers.<\/p>\n<p>The Committee\u2019s outcomes will directly influence national and regional strategies for harnessing AfCFTA opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>A Delegate member from Botswana Ephraim Sizanyr said Eswatini\u2019s chairmanship aligns with its broader commitment to regional cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>The country is also currently serving as Chair of the African Union\u2019s Specialized Technical Committee on Finance, Monetary Affairs, Economic Planning and Integration, under which it is championing initiatives to leverage government procurement for industrialization.<\/p>\n<p>Dlamini said Eswatini\u2019s focus during its tenure as ICSOE Chair would include advancing the participation of small and medium enterprises in regional value chains, supporting industrial linkages, and promoting inclusive trade.<br \/><br \/>\u201cMSMEs are central to building Africa\u2019s productive capacity. We want to ensure that smaller enterprises are part of the AfCFTA-driven value chain growth,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><div class=\"_df_book df-lite\" id=\"5046\"  data-title=\"\" wpoptions=\"true\" thumbtype=\"\" ><\/div><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The meeting brought together representatives from 11 Southern African countries, development partners, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
